A message from the Section Chair
I am honored and pleased to serve as Chair of the Academy’s Family Law Section. And I am honored and pleased to be working with a fine assembly of attorneys who have volunteered to serve as executive board officers, committee chairs, and committee members. (A full directory of the executive board and committee members is included below.)
We hope to fulfill the basic services you expect as a section member:
- CLEs worth your time and money
- Advocacy of good family law in our legislature
- Programs and activities that span out across the state to reach our membership statewide
- Full participation of the Family Law Section on the Academy’s at-large committees and programs such as the Academy’s Legal Affairs Committee and its appellate assistance and ethics programs
- Timely information on family law appellate court decisions and family law bills introduced in our legislature.
And we hope to do more. We hope to expand the participation of the Family Law Section in community service projects statewide. This goal falls into lockstep with the Academy’s overarching “Communications Plan,” which was explained in full detail in the June 2007 edition of Trial Briefs. I will be serving on the Academy’s Communications Committee and our own section committees, Communications and Public Education, will be “leading the charge” for our section to reach this goal.
To that end, I am instituting an annual award to be given to a Family Law Section member who spends the most hours in pro bono legal services in family law. The award will be presented at the Academy’s June Convention. Beyond the representation of pro bono clients, pro bono services can include speaking at free clinics, or offering free legal advice at your local domestic violence center, or participating in the Academy’s “Free Conversation with an Attorney” program. Under this program, you will provide a free initial consultation over the phone or e-mail. I encourage you to volunteer for this program and to begin now to keep records of your pro bono legal services to compete for the pro bono services award in June.
Jeanne Ford,
Section Chair
